Ceramics & Sculpture

Beginning – Advanced Clay
Instructor: Harriette Laskin - Ages 16 – Adult
Limit 8 students
Designed to help the beginning students learn the basic skills of hand-building, wheel-throwing, decorating and glazing, plus helping those ready to pursue more complex forms and concepts in clay. Students will use these techniques to complete individual projects and develop their creative expression. Sign up early for the popular class! Check with instructor for additional lab hours.

THE POTTER’S WHEEL
Instructor: Harriette Laskin - Ages 16 – Adult
Limit 6 students
Using the potter’s wheel to form lumps of clay into pottery has intrigued people for thousands of years. This small enrollment course includes basic instruction for beginners plus more advanced techniques for continuing students. Check with instructor for additional lab hours.

FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY
Instructor: Larry Lemasters – Ages 15 – Adult
Topics covered; guide number, bounce flash, multiple flash, lighting ratio, fill flash, studio style lighting, back lighting, hair lighting, ring lighting, auto flash vs. manual flash, shutter speed sync, dragging the shutter, create depth with flash, light boxes and umbrellas (white, gold, silver), translucent, dual flash units, on-camera vs. what to look for when purchasing flash. It’s Flashtastic! (Session = 4 weeks)

PHOTO COMPOSITION
Instructor: Larry Lemasters – Ages 15 – Adult
Topics covered; when to use vertical vs. horizontal format, group composition, individual composition, modeling composition, still life vs. living composition, masking your composition, macro, flattering angles to photograph and not so flattering angles, filling the frame. Bring sample work for critiquing and to learn from other students.
(Session = 4 weeks)

BLACK & WHITE DARKROOM
Instructor: Larry Lemasters – Ages 15 – Adult
Using Black & White 35 mm film, students will take photographs and learn to develop negative film and print & enlarge photos from darkroom enlarger Instruction on chemistry used for developing film and various papers, making b&w photos from color negatives, darkroom methods, operating enlarger, sepia tone, burn & dodging, increasing contrast and special effects. Setting up your own darkroom at home, where to find the deals!

INTRODUCTION TO BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY
Instructor: Larry Lemasters – Ages 15 – Adult
Participants will explore the basics of taking a picture and will learn methods and techniques to make every picture one of which they can be proud. For this class, digital or 35mm cameras are acceptable. Basic photography principals & methods will apply to either format. On-site photography lab included in class sessions.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY & CAMERA SYSTEMS
Instructor: Larry Lemasters – Ages 15 – Adult
How to use ISO, flash, shutter speed, shutter (TV) & f/stop priorty (AV), histogram ~ or listen to what your camera is telling you, white balance, manual vs. automatic, macro, using f/stop on your lens to create depth of field and filters. Bring camera, owner’s manual and sample pictures for class discussion.
On-site photography lab included in class sessions.

BEGINNING WEAVING
Instructor: Mary Scott – Adult
Learn to weave on a REAL loom! Explore creative aspects of patterns, color and thread interlacements. 2 hour sessions can be arranged with instructor during 1st class. This class is for beginners and those who need a “refresher course” to begin again. Students are asked to contact instructor prior to purchasing or bringing loom to class.
$25 Materials Fee - payable to instructor.

INTERMEDIATE FLOOR LOOM WEAVING
Instructor: Mary Scott – Adult
Students who have taken a beginning weaving class and are able to measure a warp and dress a loom alone are encouraged to take this intermediate class. Students who have not taken a class with this instructor might want to contact the instructor to discuss prior experience. A few looms are available at the Center. Students who need to reserve a loom need to contact the instructor.

BEGINNING SPINNING
Instructor: Mary Scott – Adult
This is an introductory class for those who are interested in learning to spin their own yarns. No prior experience is necessary. To develop the technique, students will receive a drop spindle and a wide variety of fibers for practice. Students who do not own a wheel should wait to purchase one until the variety of wheels is discussed. $30 Materials Fee - payable to instructor.

Special Workshops

LEARN TO MAT AND FRAME
Instructor – Harriette Laskin – All Ages
A lecture and hands-on workshop covering the basics of mat cutting and assembling frames for your prints, photographs, watercolors and painted artwork. Additional advanced workshop may be scheduled with Instructor to mat and frame more creative pieces. Includes all supplies.

OIL PAINTING DEMONSTRATION
Instructor: Robert LeMasters – All Ages
Mr. LeMasters will be painting in oils for the general public and video taping the experience for later showings. Oil painting techniques and materials, both modern and traditional, will be demonstrated along with a humorous dose of philosophy and art history. Members of the audience will be asked to participate. Fun and instructive!

ENCAUSTIC PAINTING
Instructor: Eloise Shelton-Mayo – All Ages
Discover the enchanting possibilities of encaustic painting (beeswax, pigment and resin) or build on from last workshop. You may bring photocopied pictures to collage. All supplies provided though, including a cake of medium to take home. All skill levels welcome. Bring apron or old shirt to wear. FUN!

BROOMSTICK LACE WORKSHOP
